As a result of a bequest to the QEII National Trust from Dr Athol Patterson, a bursary was set up in 2009 to support students at Massey University interested in sustainable farming practices. Dr Patterson was a doctor of tropical medicines and taught in various universities around the world before retiring to Waverley where he had two small dairy farms.

The Eurasia Dissertation Support Fellowships provide financial and academic support to graduate students near completion of their doctoral programs in the social sciences and related humanities. The program provides fellowship awards of up to $25,000 for the 2010-2011 academic year, designed to allow advanced graduate students concentrated time to devote to the intellectual development of their projects and to write up the results of their research. In addition to financial assistance, the fellowship program provides academic support and numerous networking opportunities, as all fellows will be required to attend two workshops – one at the beginning and the other at the end of the their fellowship term. These workshops will allow fellows to discuss their work in an interdisciplinary setting with a number of their peers and resource faculty, as well as provide a number of training sessions explicitly geared towards advanced graduate students.

The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and social sciences who are enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research outside of the United States. IDRF promotes research that is situated in a specific discipline and geographical region but is also informed by interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives.  Research topics may address all periods in history, but applicants should be alert to the broader implications of their research as it relates to contemporary issues and debates. The fellowship includes participation in an interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.

2009-2010 Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Awards by Rackham Graduate School in USA

These awards are designed to honor Graduate Student Instructors who have demonstrated:

  1. Exceptional ability and creativity as teachers;
  2. Continuous growth as teachers (e.g., by seeking to refine their own teaching skills and helping others to do the same);
  3. Service as outstanding mentors and advisors to their students, colleagues and others in need of their help; and
  4. Growth as scholars in the course of their graduate programs.

Students eligible for this award will have completed at least two terms (not necessarily consecutive) as Graduate Student Instructors. Graduate students whose second term of teaching will occur in the final semester of their program may be nominated for the next Outstanding GSI competition, even though they may no longer be enrolled at the University by that time.
