Job Description:
Desert Locust swarms are notorious for the periodic devastation they wreak on agriculture in a region stretching from West Africa to India. At low population densities locusts occur in the Solitarious Phase; they arecryptic in colouration and behaviour and actively avoid other locusts. When hunger or sheer local population size force locusts together, they transform into the Gregarious Phase. Gregarious locusts are conspicuous in appearance and are highly active, but the key change is that they are attracted towards other locusts, with the consequence that they eventually aggregate into vast groups.
