Scholarship Description:
The Economic & Social Research Council is the main provider of postgraduate awards in the areas of economic and social sciences. The University of Leeds has been allocated a number of studentships as part of the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre (WR DTC), a major new collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York with a total of 48 ESRC studentships per year over 5 years. The WR DTC is one of the largest consortia in the country and offers a wealth of supervisory expertise across the social sciences as well as numerous training opportunities, particularly focused upon maximising the social and economic benefits of research. These studentships are held in certain clusters/pathways and may be available on either a 1+3 or +3 basis (or a 2+2 or 2+5 basis in a more limited number of cases), depending on the chosen pathway. Applications from the fields of engineering and environmental science are invited for a research associate to work on an EU-FP7 funded project on life cycle analysis (LCA) of retrofit processes in shipyards. The successful candidate will work with partners of a large research consortium across Europe, identifying a suitable method/tool for the LCA, collecting and processing data, executing LCA simulation and analysing results. The candidate should have, or expect to have gained by the time of the appointment, a PhD or equivalent in an appropriate discipline, such as, marine technology, general engineering or environmental science. A developing publication record in peer-reviewed international journals is essential. The candidate is expected to be highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Terms on which the grants are given:-
Women graduates from Britain and overseas are eligible to apply .They must be studying in the academic year 2011 -2012 in Great Britain for a postgraduate doctoral award e.g. PhD, D.Phil. Any subject or field of study will be considered .There is no upper age limit. The aim of the scheme is to help students complete their programme and so, in the 2011 round applications will only be accepted from students intending to complete and submit their thesis before the end of the academic year 2011 2012.
Evidence of ability to pay fees is required. The competition is open to both full-time and part-time students.The Grants will be a contribution only towards the living expenses of one year’s academic study or research .The amount of the Foundation Grant will be decided by FfWG, but normally will not exceed £6,000. All our grants are offered on a needs basis and therefore not all grants will be for £6,000.The Foundation’s decision is final and no subsequent correspondence will be entered into.Grant holders must submit a written report on their year’s work within six weeks of the end of their academic year.Please note that the closing date for the return of application forms is Monday 4 April 2011 The application form must be completed on a computer and returned by e-mail. A hard signed copy of your application must be returned to the Grants Administrator at the address on the form. Before returning the completed form answer all questions on the form, do not enter ‘see C.V.’Ensure you have included:- Evidence of acceptance for the relevant year .A brief summary of your thesis (one side of A4), if applicable .A copy of your first degree .A postal order, made payable to BFWG Charitable Foundation, for the administration fee of £12 must be returned by post together with a hard signed copy of the application form and all enclosures.
