The Fullbright Commission offers The Distinguished Scholar Awards for the academic year 2010/11 to US Citizens in UK

The Fulbright Commission seeks applications from outstanding professionals or academics in any field, to undertake lecturing, research and/or professional development at any UK institution for three to ten months.  Approximately two awards are granted to US citizens each year in this category. Candidates will be selected by the Fulbright Commission and the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to receive a grant to be used towards related travel and maintenance costs. Specific Scholar Awards for Ulster, Cardiff, King’s College London and Queen’s University Belfast are offered in other categories.


Amount of the Award:

The award is for £2,500 per month (maximum £25,000) paid in installments directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given upon arrival in the UK.

Eligibility:

Minimum eligibility for this award category:

  1. US citizen (resident anywhere but the UK)
  2. Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence
  3. Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK
  4. Interest in the peoples and cultures of the UK
  5. Clear set of objectives for the Fulbright period
  6. Commitment to the host community through volunteer and extracurricular activity.

Application Procedure:

  1. Applicants must draw up a detailed project outline and provide evidence that a UK institution will agree to act as host and supervisor. Whether lecturing, conducting seminars, consulting on course design/curriculum or researching, the specifics of this arrangement should be worked out directly with the institute of affiliation. The grant year is from September until August, but scholars must begin the grant between 1 September and 30 April.
  2. Applications are made online through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). You will be able to log in and out of your application account and will not be required to complete the application in one sitting.
  3. The online application facilitated by CIES is used by Fulbright Commissions worldwide and each Commission sets its own policies and procedures with country-specific information for making an application for a Fulbright Award in their country.   5. Successful applicants will be invited for telephone interviews with Fulbright Commission senior staff on the date(s) listed below. Interviews will be held on the indicated date(s) only and may not be rescheduled.
