Udall Foundation Dissertation Fellowships For US Nationals Provides Grants For Language Maintenance At USA In 2010
Scholarship Description:
The Endangered Language Fund provides grants for language maintenance and linguistic field work. The work most likely to be funded is that which serves both the native community and the field of linguistics. Work which has immediate applicability to one group and more distant application to the other will also be considered. Publishing subventions are a low priority,although they will be considered. Proposals can originate in any country. The language involved must be in danger ofdisappearing within a generation or two. Endangerment is a continuum, and the location on the continuum is one factor in ourunding decisions.
Who Can Apply:
Dissertation fellowships are open to scholars in all fields of study whose dissertation topic has significant relevance toU.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution. Previous fellows’ fields of study includepolitical science; economics; overnment; anthropology; environmental science, policy and management; ecology; environmentaljustice; regional planning; geography; natural resource policy; and environmental analysis and design.
Each applicant must:
* Have completed all Ph.D. coursework and passed all preliminary exams;
* Have approval for the dissertation research proposal by ;
* Be entering the final year of writing the dissertation;
* Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or U.S. national.
Furthermore:
* Applicants must be enrolled at a U.S. institution of higher education; U.S. citizens attending universities outside theU.S. are not eligible;
* The primary focus of dissertation research should be U.S. environmental policy or environmental conflict resolution;
* It is the Foundation’s intent that work conducted during the fellowship year be done in the U.S.
Selection Process:
All complete and eligible applications are reviewed by an independent selection committee of past Udall Fellows and PhDs inthe fields of environmental policy and/or environmental conflict resolution.While scholarly excellence is of prime importance in selection of fellows, the Foundation is also seeking to identifyindividuals who have a demonstrated commitment to environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution, andho have the potential to make a significant impact in the real world.
Fellows will be selected on the basis of:
* Commitment to national environmental public policy or environmental conflict resolution, as demonstrated throughcoursework, teaching experience, public and community service, field work, and career aspirations;
* Quality of the dissertation project: project design, feasibility, originality, and scholarly significance;
* Potential of applicant to make a significant contribution to the field;
* Scholarly excellence;
* The essay: quality of writing and critical analysis.
Conditions:
The dissertation fellowship is intended to offset a scholar’s living expenses while he or she focuses on completing thedissertation, and must be used during the final year of writing the dissertation. It is anticipated that the doctoral degreewill be received at the end of the fellowship year, and a copy of the dissertation remitted to the Foundation.The Foundation regards the acceptance of a fellowship as a contract that requires fulfillment of the following terms:1) A Udall Dissertation Fellow is required to pursue his or her project full time during the fellowship year, July 1 – June30. No partial fellowships are awarded.
2) Any significant changes in plans for the fellowship year must have the prior written approval of the Foundation.
3) The Foundation must be notified promptly of any change in the status of an application resulting from acceptance ofanother award.
4) Stipend checks are made payable to fellows, not to institutions.
5) Dissertation fellowships fund living and educational expenses for a period of twelve months while a fellow pursuesfull-time writing of the dissertation. Acceptance of any concurrent funds must have prior approval of the Foundation.
Fellowships do not fund:
* research assistants
* field research
* laboratory supplies and equipment
* purchase of computer equipment
* publication costs
* travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars
* tuition for additional coursework
* repayment of loans or other personal obligations (Fellowships are not retroactive.)
* tuition for a dependent’s educatio
