Fellowship for the year 2010/11 for Doctorates by National Humanities Center in USA
The National Humanities Center offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities during the academic year, September 2010 through May 2011. Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Young scholars as well as senior scholars are encouraged to apply, but they must have a record of publication, and new Ph.D.s should be aware that the Center does not support the revision of a doctoral dissertation. In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. The Center is also international and gladly accepts applications from scholars outside the United States.
Stipends:
Fellowships are individually determined, the amount depending upon the needs of the Fellow and the Center’s ability to meet them. The Center seeks to provide at least half salary and also covers travel expenses to and from North Carolina for Fellows and their dependents.
Application Procedures:
Applicants submit the Center’s form, supported by a curriculum vitae, a 1000-word project proposal, and three letters

Selection Process:
Applications are read by specialists in their fields and by an interdisciplinary committee of distinguished scholars. Criteria of evaluation are:
- the significance of the proposed research;
- the quality of the research proposal in definition, organization, clarity, and scope;
- the quality or promise of the candidate; and
- the likelihood of the project’s being successfully pursued at the National Humanities Center. The selection committee seeks scholarly excellence and a good mix of disciplines, ages, regions, and institutions.
Application Guidelines:
Submit five collated copies of the following:
- Application Form – the completed application form (*PDF file), available for printing from this website
- Curriculum Vitae – a curriculum vitae of no more than four pages
- Project Description – a 1,000 word project description
- Outline of Chapters – a one-page tentative outline of chapters
- Short Bibliography
Use 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper (or trim to 11″ or 28 cm) and do not staple any submitted materials. No application materials will be accepted via FAX or e-mail.
