Medical Research Council Fellowships Provides Four Years’ Funding For Multidisciplinary Research Training 2010 In UK

Job Description:
MRC fellowships enable outstanding individuals to undertake challenging projects in excellent research and training environments. An MRC award is there to enable you to do something truly out of the ordinary in training and developing you as a potential research leader.This Fellowship is open to applicants already working in, or who wish to move into, health related research. It provides up to four years’ funding for multidisciplinary research training into innovative statistical methods and their application in clinical research. Applicants should present not only a challenging research project but also clear and ambitious plans for their development as researchers able to apply advanced skills to an increasingly broad range of problems.Who Can Apply:
Applicants should either hold, or expect to receive before the award starts, a doctorate in statistics, biostatistics or a related discipline and less than 5 years post-doctoral experience. However, please note that candidates without medical statistical experience are welcome to apply; provided they specify a training package appropriate to the aims of this fellowship.At the postdoctoral level, all Fellowships provide the Fellow’s competitive salary and necessary research training costs (e.g. consumables, travel, equipment etc) and other costs allowable under Full Economic Costs (FEC). Any research staff required should be requested and clearly justified but this would be considered exceptional.

Submission Of Applications:
To give your application the best possible chance of success, please note the following points:The format of the application form must not be changed by the applicant. The complete application form must be submitted as one Microsoft Word document on a CD ROM only, together with one original hard copy of any pages on which signatures are required. The disc and hard copies must be received by the MRC by 4pm on the advertised closing dates. Please remember that failure to complete any relevant part of the application in the format required may invalidate it. All CD ROMs must be submitted in PC format. Faxed, emailed, late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Proof of postage will not be accepted as evidence of receipt by the MRC.Confirmation of receipt can only be provided to applicants who provide a stamped self addressed envelope with their application

Assessment Of Applications:
All applications for MRC fellowships are assessed by independent scientific experts in the relevant fields. They assess the quality of the proposed research environment, the potential of the applicant, and the scientific excellence of the proposal.Applications are short-listed and candidates are invited to interview by the relevant Training and Career Development Panel. Comments from the expert referee are used to assist the panel’s decision-making. If a research proposal does not fall within the scientific expertise of the existing panel members, we co-opt new members specifically for the interview. Interviews take place at MRC Head Office, 20 Park Crescent, London W1B 1AL. The MRC makes a contribution towards the costs of interviewees’ return travel by the most economic route. The MRC cannot pay for meals during journeys, nor for taxis unless our Research Career Awards group agrees this taxi travel in advance of the interview date.Applicants will be informed as soon as a final decision has been made about their application. Successful candidates are asked to confirm whether they wish to take up the award within two weeks of an offer being made.
