The Glasgow University offers The Wingate Scholarships to Outstanding Individuals for the year 2010/11 in UK

Wingate Scholarships are awarded to outstanding individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value and to musicians for advanced training. Applicants need to be at least 24 and there is no upper age limit. The Scholarship Committee welcomes applications from mature candidates and those from non-traditional academic backgrounds, as well as those who have had to overcome difficult financial or social circumstances. They must be citizens of the UK, the Commonwealth, Israel or Ireland, or citizens of Council of Europe member countries.

Eligibility:

To be eligible to apply, applicants must be:

  1. Resident and contactable in the United Kingdom during the period of application (October 2009 – July 2010). Applications will only be accepted if submitted from a valid UK address. This applies to all candidates.
  2. Citizens of the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth or former Commonwealth country, Ireland or Israel, or
  3. Citizens of an EU or Council of Europe member country (see Useful Links)- if they will have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years on 1 September 2010
  4. 24 years of age or over on 1 September 2010 (there is no upper age limit)
  5. Able to provide evidence of real financial need.


Selection Criteria:

  1. Applicants must demonstrate they meet one or more of the following 5 priorities:
  2. Will undertake a project with the potential markedly to benefit humanity, either collectively or in a specific community (by way of health, wealth or personal fulfilment).
  3. Wish to pursue a project which has the potential to make a radical impact on the applicant’s future work and/or life direction.
  4. Seek to undertake a project requiring the effective application of an innovative multi-disciplinary approach
  5. Face unusual hardship or have overcome significant personal difficulties
  6. Are unable to access financial support from traditional funding sources for reasons of residency, citizenship or other legal requirements
  7. In addition successful applicants must be able to meet both of the following two criteria:
  8. Show clear evidence of outstanding ability, promise or creative attainment in one or more of the eligible subject areas
  9. Seek to undertake or to complete a project of outstanding originality, creativity and quality, for which they can demonstrate they have the necessary motivation and ability.


Application Procedure:

  1. Scholarships are awarded through an annual programme. Applications for the Wingate Scholarships Programme 2010 will be accepted from October 1, 2009 until the deadline for receipt of applications at 17.00 hours on Monday February 1, 2010.
