Chemistry Postdoctoral Research Assistant To Work On A Specific Project Funded By The Leverhulme Trust At UK In 2010
Job Description:
This post is for a post-doctoral research assistant to work on a specific project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The Ancient Human Occupation of Britain (AHOB) Project, directed by Prof. Chris Stringer (Nat. History Museum, London) is composed of a team of researchers investigating ancient humans from the Palaeolithic to the Mesolithic of northern Europe (http://www.ahobproject.org). The third phase of this research, “Dispersals of Early Humans: Adaptations, frontiers and new territories”, runs for three years from 1 October 2009. The post is for a PDRA to work specifically on Module 3 “Modern migrants. 50,000-11,000 years ago” for the next two years. We are interested particularly in understanding more about the chronology and early dispersal and origins of the Gravettian techno-complex, as well as extending previous work regarding the recolonisation of the British Isles at the end of the last Glacial.
The successful applicant will oversee the sample preparation and chemical pre-treatment work of samples for radiocarbon analysis in this project. For the radiocarbon part of the work the post-holder will work closely with the Deputy Director and the Research Chemist of ORAU. Other staff are responsible for the mass spectrometry and AMS measurements themselves and for the main liaison with sample submitters. The job will mostly involve work on samples submitted to the laboratory by the PDRA and AHOB colleagues, but will also include some in-house research. We anticipate that some work will be required in the sampling of material for the dating projects in which we are participating. This would involve possible travel to museums and collections in Europe and the British Isles. Previous experience of sampling bone would be very useful.
Selection Criteria:
• Direct experience of radiocarbon dating
• Relevant degree and post-graduate qualifications
• Evidence of ability to work in a team
• Experience of working in a chemical or biological laboratory
• Good practical skills
• Record keeping and computing skills
• Good research and publication track record
• Experience of working with quality assurance procedures would be an advantage
Terms Of Appointment:
Any offer of employment will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a medical questionnaire and the provision of an original document, which indicates the holder’s right to work in the UK. All candidates invited for interview will be required to provide this evidence when attending for interview.Salary will be at an appropriate point in Grade 6 scale, which is currently £25,751 – £30,747per annum. The salary is payable at monthly intervals in arrears by credit transfer to a bank or building society account. The salary scale is incremental, with annual increments on
1 August until the top of the scale is reached. There is also an annual “cost-of-living”
