National Research Foundation Freestanding Scholarships 2010 Provides bursaries And scholarships To Postgraduate Students In South Africa
Background:
The National Research Foundation Freestanding scholarships previously called Prestigious and Equity (P&E) scholarships were introduced as a means of contributingtowards human resource development by providing bursaries and scholarships to postgraduate students, based on merit and potential.ArAeas Of support:
The scholarships are intended to support students studying towards research baseddegrees in all areas of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) and in SocialSciences and Humanities..
Selection Criteria:
Eligible candidates are South African citizens who obtained an aggregate of at least 60%for the subject(s) with which they wish to pursue their postgraduate studies. Preferencewill be given to applicants who obtained their degree in the minimum prescribed period.In instances where the student took an additional year to obtain the previous degree, astrong motivation from the supervisor will be required.

Please refer to the funding manual and guidelines for applicants attached.NB: Please submit a paper copy of your on-line application to Ms Bongiwe Ndamane at thePostgraduate Funding Office, Otto Beit Building, Upper Campus, UCTon or before the 10th August 2010 for onward forwarding to the NRF.

a. Please ensure that you have read the Scholarships and Fellowships FundingManual for 2011 funding opportunities. This can be found on the NRF website,http://www.nrf.ac.za under the Student link. The manual provides all theimportant information about deadline dates, eligibility criteria, values of awards,supplementation, periods of support and how to apply for funding for eachprogramme in the Scholarships and Fellowships Programme.b. Ensure that all important information is provided in your application forfunding. All information provided in your application will be used during theassessment of the application and no further information supplied after theclosing date of the call will be considered during assessment.c. To ensure that your application is complete please remember to complete theCV section of the application on NRF Online at http://nrfonline.nrf.ac.za. If theCV section is incomplete your application will not be considered for assessment.d. Remember to complete all sections of the application form and upload all therequired and necessary documents, such as official and certified academictranscripts and degree certificates, certified copy of ID document, proof ofregistration (if applicable), motivation and reference letters in support ofapplication.e. Only full time studies will be supported under all the programmes with theexception of applications for students with disabilities.f. Applicants with non-binding contractual obligations are eligible to apply for thescholarship/fellowship with the exception of the PDP programme wheresuccessful candidates will have to sign a contract with the host institution.g. Applicants who are in salaried employment or working more than 12 hours perweek are not eligible to apply for the scholarship/fellowship.h. Applicants with qualifications obtained in a language other than English shouldattach a certified English transcript of the qualification.
