PhD Studentship 2010 – Cranfield University – UK

PhD Studentship For MSc. Candidates Who Have Knowledge In Relevant Discipline At Cranfield University In UK 2010

Description:
Cranfield University, as part of the European Commission FP7-ENERGY programme, is seeking a highly motivated and practically minded graduate to undertake this exciting research project. This project aims to identify an appropriate technique for removing waste heat from powered machine tools and high temperature surfaces to be used in energy harvesting.Stray thermal energy is a key limiting factor in ultra precision machining and metrology. This project will investigate a technology to remove waste heat from powered machine tools and will consider appropriate technologies for energy harvesting from high temperature surfaces, up to 550°C. The work will focus on novel thermoelectric converter (TEC) devices including electronic (semiconductor-based) technology, nanotechnology-based coating technology, and ferrofluid turbulent flow technology. The project requires thermal analysis of representative powered machines and high temperature surfaces, an investigation of thermoelectric and thermomagnetic conversion technologies, and the development of energy harvesting technologies for both medium and high temperature applications. The successful candidate will be based in the Precision Engineering Centre at Cranfield University, Bedfordshire. Some foreign travel may be necessary, principally to Italy and Egypt.Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme:
The successful candidate will attend Cranfield University’s ‘Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme’ which is designed to equip students with research skills required during their research studies and in their future careers. This programme consists of a series of one-day events, coupled with smaller interactive group sessions.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline such mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, or materials science. An MSc in a relevant subject is highly desirable. Knowledge or experience of precision engineering, heat transport, or energy generation technologies, would be an advantage.

Funding:
*Supported by an EU FP7 Project grant, this studentship will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £14,000 p.a. for three years dependent upon qualifications and experience.
