PhD Studentship At Cranfield University 2010 – UK

Cranfield University Offered PhD Studentship For A Graduate Students In Linear Friction Welding At UK In 2010

Description:
Cranfield University, in collaboration with TWI, a leading research organisation in materials joining, have an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate in linear friction welding. The linear friction welding process is rapidly developing into an important manufacturing technology for high quality joining of engineering materials. The process works by rubbing the two parts to be joined against each other at high frequency, which plasticises the material and creates the high quality joint. The parts produced by the process have excellent mechanical properties; it is an excellent process for joining titanium, and it is finding increasing use in additive manufacture applications, particularly in aerospace. Despite these advantages the process is under exploited, which is partly due to a lack of scientific understanding of the process.

To address this problem a collaborative project will be run between TWI Ltd and Cranfield University to understand how the process can be optimised and to develop techniques for joining dissimilar materials, such as steel to titanium. This will be achieved through the development of a simple process model to understand how heat is generated and how it then flows into the two materials being welded. In addition, a series of instrumented welds will be undertaken which use high speed video and thermal imaging to validate the models. During the project there will be a high level of collaboration with TWI and potential end users who have an interest in the exciting opportunities provided by this process. The students will be based at the Cranfield University’s Welding Engineering Research Centre, which has an international reputation for welding research and a wide range of state-of-the-art welding equipment including an 8 kW fibre laser.Technical Schools Research Students Training ProgrammeThe successful candidate will attend Cranfield University’s ‘Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme’ which is designed to equip students with research skills required during their research studies and in their future careers. This programme consists of a series of one-day events, coupled with smaller interactive group sessions.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline, such as mechanical engineering, materials or physics. Also a good technical background, a self motivator with an aptitude for industrial research and an EU passport are necessary.

Funding:

*Supported by an EPSRC bursary and TWI this studentship will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £16,000 p.a. for three years dependent upon qualifications and experience. To be eligible for funding applicants must demonstrate a relevant connection with the UK, usually through being ordinarily resident for a period of 3 years immediately prior to the date of application for the award. However, nationals of other member states of the European Union are eligible for fees-only awards if they are resident in their own country in the same way that other candidates are required to be resident in the UK. Eligibility details are available at: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students…
