Scholarship Description:
The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Victoria University of Wellington are offering a Master of Science (MSc) scholarship in the field of plant molecular systematics at Victoria University. The purpose of this Master of Science scholarship in the field of plant molecular systematics at Victoria University is to promote research between Te Papa and Victoria University in the area of plant molecular systematics, ecology and evolution.The first year involves three papers and a Research Preparation project. The second year comprises the research thesis, worth 60% of the total degree. The Te Papa-VUW scholarship provides the successful applicant with a student stipend of $4000 in part 1 (2009) and $6000 in part 2 (2010). It is also possible to take a MSc by thesis alone if a BSc(Hons) or equivalent has already been completed. The stipend in such cases is $5000 for the one year.
Projects for 2010-2011 include investigation of:
• species boundaries amongst Gleichenia ferns (Brittonia, 2007, 59:129-141).
• phylogeography and/or hybridisation in Asplenium ferns (e.g., Molecular Ecology, 2007, 16:4536-4549; Molecular Phylogenetics & Evolution, 2008, 49:240-248).
• species relationships amongst Myosotis forget-me-nots (e.g., Molecular Phylogenetics & Evolution, 2008, 47:319-338).
• or another topic to be determined.
Purpose Of Award:
The purpose of the award is to promote research between Te Papa and Victoria University of Wellington in the area of molecular systematics, ecology and evolution. The nature of the researchproject will be determined jointly by staff at Te Papa and Victoria University of Wellington, and offered if an appropriate supervisor is available.
Academic Level:
A standard MSc degree at Victoria University is undertaken over two years. The first year involves three papers and a Research Preparation project. The second year comprises the research thesis,worth 60% of the total degree. The Te PapaVUW scholarship provides the successful applicant with a student stipend of $4000 in part 1 and $6000 in part 2. It is also possible to take a MSc by thesis alone if a BSc(Hons) or equivalent has already been completed. The stipend in such cases is $5000 for the one year.
Value Of Scholarships:
Scholarship to student: $4,000 in year one (in two equal instalments), $6000 in year two (in two equal instalments). The first instalment for each year is in February. The second instalment for each year is in July. Payment of each instalment is contingent on the submission of satisfactory progress reports to the student’s supervisory panel. It is also possible to take a MSc by thesis alone if a BSc(Hons) or equivalent has already been completed. The stipend in such cases is $5000 for the one year.
Application Process:
Applicants are required to complete the application form and attach any required documentation and submit this to the Scholarships Office by the due documents required
include:
(a) a curriculum vitae with details of the applicant’s academic record
(b) an academic transcript
(c) one A4 page statement outlining why you are interested in plant systematics. You should indicate which particular project you are interested in and why this particular project and the techniques involved would be of interest to you Closing date for applications
Selection Process:
The selection panel will consist of representatives from the School of Biological Sciences and from Te Papa and a member of the University Scholarships Committee. Applicants may be required to participate in a telephone interview. Intellectual property The parties to this scholarship agree to manage intellectual property arising from the research programme to which the scholarship applies in the following manner:
o Copyright in the thesis and any publications arising from the thesis shall belong to the Student (or in the case of publications, the Student in conjunction with any coauthors that may have contributed). Beyond this the Student agrees to assign ownership of intellectual property generated as part of the supervised research to VUW and Te Papa.
o In the expectation that any intellectual property generated from the Student’s research programme will not be of commercial value VUW and Te Papa agree to own the intellectual property jointly and severally.
o In the event that the intellectual property has commercial value VUW and Te Papa agree to undertake all matters necessary to successfully commercialise the intellectual property including as necessary, but not limited to, obtaining intellectual property protection, assigning the intellectual property from one party to the other, contributing equally to the costs of commercialisation, and pursuing commercialisation opportunities.
o The net benefits from the commercialisation of the intellectual property shall be shared between VUW and Te Papa equally. In turn VUW shall share one third its net benefits with the Student and any staff that may have contribute to the development of the intellectual property, in accordance with VUW’s intellectual property policy.
