The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S citizens undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.The Gilman Scholarship Program seeks to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Specifically, the Gilman Program offers scholarships for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.Since the inception of the Gilman Scholarship Program in 2001, 18,960 applications have been received and 4,728 scholarships have been awarded to students participating in study abroad programs.
Eligibility:
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:
- The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad.
- The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
- The applicant is studying abroad for at least 28 days in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 28 consecutive days.
- The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the State Department’s current Travel Warning list.
Selection criteria:
The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to:
- Students with high financial need
- Students interested in studying in diverse countries, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia
- Students attending community colleges
- Students with diverse ethnic backgrounds
- Students from diverse range of institutions including two-year, four-year, public, private, minority-serving, etc.
- Students with disabilities.
How to apply:
There are four components to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Application:
- Online student section.
- Online study abroad advisor certification.
- Online financial aid advisor certification.
- Three paper copies of the student’s transcript/s.
- All four components must be completed by the deadlines below in order for your application to be accepted. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered and extensions cannot be granted.
Scholarship deadline:
- Spring 2010 Timeline:
The Spring 2010 application cycle is for programs beginning between December 15, 2009 and April 15, 2010. This cycle encompasses spring semester, quarter, calendar year, winter inter-session, January term, and summer 2010 programs that are a minimum of 28 days in length. The Gilman Scholarship Program will be piloting a special Summer 2010 cycle for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field disciplines. - August 20, 2009-Online Application opens for Spring 2010 and Summer 2010 application cycle.
- October 6, 2009-Student Deadline for submission of online application.
- October 9, 2009-Postmark Deadline for official, university undergraduate transcripts. Applicants must submit three copies of their undergraduate transcript from their current university and most recently attended transfer institution, if applicable.
- October 13, 2009-Advisor Deadline for submission of online Study Abroad Advisor and Financial Aid Advisor certification.
- October/November 2009-Complete Applications are processed and distributed to selection panels for review.
- Early December 2009-All Applicants are notified of the status of their application via email. Study Abroad and Financial Aid Advisors will be notified of scholarship recipients via email.
- Mid-December 2009-Award Recipients must accept/decline their award and send in required documentation.
- Fall 2010 Timeline:
The Fall 2010 application cycle is for study abroad programs beginning between July 15 and October 15, 2010. This cycle encompasses fall semester, quarter and academic year study abroad programs that are a minimum of 28 days in length.
