Massey University Provides Gordon Watson Scholarship For International Ph.D Degree At New Zealand In 2010

Introduction:
The funds for this scholarship are provided by the income from a bequest made in 1951 by Isabel Evelyn Spencer Watson to the University of New Zealand for the establishment and maintenance of a scholarship as a memorial to her nephew, Clement Gordon Watson.

Purpose:
The general purpose of the said bequest is to enable the holder of the said scholarship to study abroad questions of international relationships or social and economic conditions, at Masters or PhD level.The said scholarship shall be known as the ‘Gordon Watson Scholarship’.The capital of the said bequest shall be held as a foundation or endowment for the said scholarships which shall be paid out of the income from the said bequest after first charging against such income all expenses incurred in the administration of the said bequest and in the award of the said scholarship and incidental thereto.

Constitution Of Selection Board:

The said scholarship shall be awarded by a Board of Selection that shall consist of the following:
The Governor-General for the time being or in his/her absence from New Zealand the Administrator of the Government; the Anglican Bishop of Wellington for the time being; the Minister of Education for the time being; two members of the NZVCC who shall be appointed and may be removed and replaced by it from time to time.The Governor-General, the Bishop of Wellington and the Minister of Education, if unable to act personally, may appoint another person to represent them on the Board of Selection.

Frequency And Value:

Each scholarship shall be awarded at such time and shall be of such amount as the NZVCC shall from time to time decide but if possible at least one scholarship shall be awarded every year if in the opinion of the NZVCC sufficient income is available for the purpose.

Eligibility:
Candidates for the said scholarship must hold an honours degree, or a degree in theology, of a university in New Zealand. Applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or Permanent Resident.Return to New Zealand Candidates for the said scholarship must undertake in writing that if awarded a scholarship they will at the conclusion thereof return to New Zealand and take up residence in New Zealand for not less than two years. The Board of Selection may, however, waive this requirement in any particular case or release a scholarship-holder from the undertaking given.

Qualifications:
In the award of the said scholarship the Board of Selection shall have regard not only to the educational attainments but also the character and qualities of leadership of the candidates.

Applications:
Applicants shall apply for the scholarships by completing the forms supplied by the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors’ Committee (NZVCC). All applicants who are enrolled, or recently graduated from, a university in New Zealand shall forward their applications to reach the Scholarships Office of that university no later than 1 March in the year in which they propose to commence their graduate study. All other applicants shall forward their applications to reach the Scholarships Manager of the NZVCC no later than 1 March.Candidates are requested by the Board to send in as part of their applications, a statement of their school history, general activities, proposed course and subsequent intentions, together withevidence of their personal character and capacity for leadership.

Term And Payments:
No scholarship shall be awarded upon any occasion if the Board of Selection shall be of the opinion that there is no candidate of sufficient merit offering for the same.Each scholarship shall be awarded for a term of up to three years to be spent at a university or universities in Britain, Europe, Asia, or America. The emolument of such scholarships shall be paid at such times and in such manner as the NZVCC shall from time to time decide, normally in New Zealand currency six-monthly in advance.
