The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Scholars Program For High-Achieving Students Studied At US In 2011

Scholarship Description:
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Scholars Program was founded on the idea that if you give high-achieving students with financial need the guidance and resources necessary for them to excel during high school, college, and beyond, their greatness will emerge.The Foundation’s Young Scholars Program is designed to nurture exceptional students who have demonstrated, through academic excellence and extracurricular activities, that they have the potential to excel. Students apply for the program in 7th grade, enter the program in 8th grade, and continue through high school.

Eligibility:
If you are able to answer “yes” to these four questions, you are eligible to apply to the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program:
   1. Will you enter 8th grade in the fall of 2011?
   2. Do you earn grades of all or mostly ‘As’ in school, with no ‘Cs’ or below in the past two years in your academic subjects?*
   3. Does your family have significant unmet financial need?**
   4. Do you reside in the United States or a US Territory and plan to attend a high school in the US?
*Exception: Students with unique talents or documented learning differences.
**The average family income of our previous class of Young Scholars was approximately $27,000. We take into consideration: high cost of living expenses in some areas, extraordinary medical expenses, number of dependents in college, number of dependents, and high cost of supporting children with learning differences.

Application:
We are no longer accepting new applications for the 2010 Young Scholars Program selection period.  Applications for the 2011 Young Scholars Program selection cycle will be available by mid-January 2011.

Timeline:
    * February: The Foundation makes application materials available to all 7th-grade students on the Foundation’s website.
    * Last Monday in April: All applications to the Young Scholars Program must be received (April 25, 2011).
    * May-September: The Foundation’s expert panel and program managers review all applications.
    * November: The Foundation notifies all applicants in writing if they have been selected as a Young Scholar.  The Foundation’s educational advisers contact all new Young Scholars and arrange an in-person visit to the Scholar’s home.

The Foundation selects Young Scholars from across the nation, reviewing each application individually.  A panel of outside education experts identifies Scholars using the following criteria:
Academic Ability and high Achievement
A strong academic record, academic awards and honors, and a confidential letter of recommendation from a teacher. Also considered are grades (generally a GPA above 3.5 or mostly “A” grades), standardized test scores, commitment to learning, and a strong work ethic. Exceptions for lower GPAs may be considered for applicants displaying unique talents or learning differences.

Additional Criteria:
A will to succeed (determination and perseverance in the face of challenges); leadership and public service (initiative on behalf of others, such as participation in volunteer, community, and school-related activities); critical thinking ability; and appreciation for or participation in the arts and humanities, or study of music, art, literature, or similar fields.To be eligible for the program, students must apply in the spring of 7th grade.
